I didn't take nearly enough photos of this project because it came together so quickly!
My dad rescued a piece of wood from the fire pile because he thought I might find it interesting. The wood under the bark had trails from worms or other borers on it, and was otherwise in perfect shape. I considered turning it into a little bench, but ultimately decided on a lap desk.
I found some inspiration on Pinterest, then headed to Two Harbors to visit North Shore Architectural Antiques for vintage or antique handles.
I picked up two pair and had the family weigh in:
We decided on the slightly more ornate pair, routered the edges, sanded the works, attached the handles and applied several coats of high gloss spray polyurethane.
Perfect for grading essays on my lap or for keeping my coffee cup (or wineglass) close at hand.
