Black ash bench and homemade hairpin legs

When I discovered my dad had a large piece of black ash with gorgeous detailing like this, I just had to ask him if we could make a bench. I'd also been admiring tables and chairs with hairpin legs , and knew he'd be able to make them. Our first step was cutting the wood to size. A few runs through the planer, and the beauty of the wood was starting to show through. Next, we softened the edges with a handheld router. We argued a bit over which side of the wood to use--I wanted the craggy caverns and swirls around the wood's sizable knot, while he preferred the other side, which was nearly clear (knot-free). After getting input from my uncle and a family friend, I won. Next step: bending hair pin legs and welding them to square plates to attach to the bench. Here they are pre-paint. Spray painting them brown. You can see he had to weld them at a bit of an angle to the base plate: And attaching them: And voila!

Live edge cabinet top

A few years ago now, my dad's best friend DJ rescued this piece of live edge cherry wood from ending up as firewood. It had some oil stains and other marks on it, but he was able to sand it off easily. Once the wood was all cleaned up, he used a wipe-on poly for the flat sides (about twelve coats for each side) and a spray poly for the live edge. It turned out beautifully: I bought three sets of Ikea cabinets and a mini-refrigerator (one meant to go under a countertop) and cleared the space: I'm so very lucky my friend helped me put everything together, and amazingly, everything fit: Don't forget to peel off the blue plastic that protects the cabinets: And voila! It fits so perfectly, it feels like it's always been there.

Trestle Table

Remember that pile of maple that provided the top to my salvaged Herman Eames coffee table ? I had asked my dad if we could make a trestle table (for the dining room I don’t have yet) and ordered him a Tommy Mac trestle table DVD for Christmas (so selfless, I know). My uncle liked the idea so well he used the design to make a table for his daughter (modifying it, of course—he used 2x3”s on edge for the tabletop and essentially doubled the thickness of the posts, stretcher, and battens). Dad and I sawed the boards to length and planed, edged, and glued the tabletop over the summer. It then it took up space in his woodshop until I came home over the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks.
