Black ash bench and homemade hairpin legs

When I discovered my dad had a large piece of black ash with gorgeous detailing like this, I just had to ask him if we could make a bench. I'd also been admiring tables and chairs with hairpin legs, and knew he'd be able to make them.
Our first step was cutting the wood to size.
A few runs through the planer, and the beauty of the wood was starting to show through.
Next, we softened the edges with a handheld router.

We argued a bit over which side of the wood to use--I wanted the craggy caverns and swirls around the wood's sizable knot, while he preferred the other side, which was nearly clear (knot-free). After getting input from my uncle and a family friend, I won.
Next step: bending hair pin legs and welding them to square plates to attach to the bench. Here they are pre-paint.
Spray painting them brown. You can see he had to weld them at a bit of an angle to the base plate:
And attaching them:
And voila!
